About Ahmedabad-Mumbai High Speed Rail Network

  • The project is commonly known as the bullet train.
  • It will have the capacity to accomodate 750 people.
  • It is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from seven to three hours.
  • Rs1.10 trillion will be spent on the project that is being partially funded by Japan.
  • The target for its completion is December 2023
  • The train will stop at each of the 12 railway stations on the route, but only for 165 seconds.
  • A 21-km-long tunnel will be dug between Boisar and BKC in Mumbai, of which 7km will be under water.
  • The entire line will be at an elevation of around 20 m which will reduce land acquisition.
  • An MoU was signed by the governments of India and Japan on 12 December 2015.
  • The Ministry of Railways, based on the recommendtion of the NITI Aayog, announced that Shinkansen technology would be adopted for the line, with technology transfer to support the Make in India programme. Japan would also provide staff training.
  • In January 2016, the Ministry of Railways fast tracked the project and set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited to build and operate the corridor.
