Global Hunger Index: Indian Ranked 100th

India is ranked 100th among 119 developing countries on the Global Hunger Index 2017


  • India was ranked 97th last year. 
  • India's hunger problem is driven by high child malnutrition and underlines the need for stronger commitment to the social sector
  • China was ranked 29th
  • Nepal has been ranked 72
  • Myanmar was at 77th
  • Sri Lanka secured 84th rank
  • Bangladesh is at 88th rank
  • Pakistan is at 106th and Afghanistan is at 107th. 

Global Hunger Index


  • The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a multidimensional statistical tool used to describe the state of countries’ hunger situation. 
  • It measures progress and failures in the global fight against hunger.

The GHI combines 4 component indicators: 
1) the proportion of the undernourished as a percentage of the population
2) the proportion of children under the age of five suffering from wasting
3) the proportion of children under the age of five suffering from stunting
4) the mortality rate of children under the age of five.
