World’s largest Combustion Research Centre at Madras

The world's largest combustion research centre was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. 

  • It is named as National Centre for Combustion Research and Development 
  • It was inaugurated by NITI Aayog member V K Saraswat 
  • NCCRD's research interests will cover automotive, thermal power and aerospace propulsion, besides fire research and microgravity combustion to minor extent
  • NCCRD is supported by the state-run Science and Engineering Research Board of Department of Science and Technology (DST).
  • It will impart a major boost to the Indian scientific community.
  • This centre will develop futuristic capabilities in combustion research involving experts in the country.

NCCRD

  • National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) is founded by the Combustion Institute – Indian Section and funded by the Department of Science and Technology at Indian Institute of Technology Madras and at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. 
  • It highlights the growing recognition of combustion and its importance on energy and environment
  • It promots Academic Research in Combustion and Develop trained researchers. 
  • It increases the density of scientists and engineers in combustion research by promoting Graduation of more PhDs and Masters Students with research on combustion.
  • It conducts series of summer and winter schools to train students and professionals across the country.
  • It coordinates Research work formulated to address the following key industry sectors - Automotive Combustion, Thermal Power, Aerospace Propulsion and Fire Supression
