Maharashtra Sets up Committee to Curb Custodial Deaths

The state government of Maharashtra has constituted a seven-member committee to find out the methods to control custodial deaths.
  • The committee will be headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sudhir Shrivastava 
  • The formation of the panel comes after the custodial death of Aniket Kothale in Sangli city earlier this month.
  • The committee will also recommend measures so that people get proper treatment at police stations.
  • The panel will submit its report to the government within 15 days. 
  • After submission of the report, the government will issue circulars aimed at putting in place a system whereby incidents of custodial deaths are brought to zero in a progressive state like Maharashtra
  • The committee will also consider the government circulars issued in the past as well as the judgments of the high court and Supreme Court, he said
