The day is celebrated annually since 2014 to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Atal Bihari Bajpayee contributed to create awareness among Indian people of accountability in government.

Background

On 23 December 2014, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were announced as recipients of India's highest civilian award for merit, the Bharat Ratna Following the announcement, the newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to commemorate Good Governance Day on 25th December.

  • It aims at creating awareness among people about government's commitment to provide an accountable administration. 
  • The day enhances the welfare and betterment of the people.
  • It focuses on standardising government functioning and make it effective for the citizens
