Surface-to-air Akash Missile Successfully Tested

India has added another feather in its cap of indigenously built missiles by successfully testing surface-to-air Akash missile at Chandipur

The test was declared successful when Akash hit its target an UAV ‘Banshee’
By successfully testing this missile, India is now capable of making any kind of missile in the domestic region. Consequently, India's dependence upon other countries for importing missile will diminish.

Features of Akash Missile

  • Akash is an indigenously built supersonic surface-to-air missile with radio frequency seeker
  • This missile will be inducted into the Army as short range surface to air missile.
  • With a strike range of about 25 km it can be is triggered a y proximity fuse.
  • It is an all-weather area air defence weapon system for defending vulnerable areas against medium-range air targets penetrating from low, medium and high altitudes.
  • Akash missile system has the capability to neutralise aerial targets like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles as well as ballistic missiles.
  • Integral ram jet rocket propulsion system ensures stability and control.
  • Electro-pneumatic servo actuation system controls cruciform wings for agile response and thermal batteries provide onboard power supply. The radio proximity fuse has advanced signal processing features.
  • Together with the pre-fragmented warhead and safety arming mechanism, a high kill probability of manoeuvring targets is assured.
