Maharashtra Unveils Public Cloud Policy

The government of Maharashtra has taken a step ahead to promote startup and innovation and thus launched its State Innovation and Start-up Policy.

  • The aim of the policy is to tackle unemployment by generating 5 lakh jobs in the next five years.
  •  Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled the Public Cloud Policy which targets $2 billion opportunities for the industry and initially the state government departments are asked to shift its data storage onto the cloud.
  • With the introduction of the public cloud policy, Maharashtra has become the first state to launch such policy which would create a $2-billion opportunity for the industry.  
  • Government will make it mandatory for the data to be stored within the country and the broad idea is to use public cloud in cases wherever the Right to Information Act is applicable, and then go in for enhanced security features for private and sensitive data, which will also be stored on the cloud 


A four-member committee was formed by the state government to draft a policy framework on cloud usage two months ago. The committee submitted the document that will be adopted now as the Public Cloud Policy.  In the next 20 days, five to six top cloud service providers like Amazon or Microsoft will be empanelled.

The State Innovation and Start-up Policy

Maharashtra Government also cleared the State Innovation and Start-up Policy which will be applicable till 2022. The policy aims at attracting Rs 5,000 crore investment in the development of incubation and start-ups.
 Aims of the policy
  • Provide Rs. 2,500 crore for youth entrepreneurship activities (one percent of State Budget)
  • Establish three incubators in each of the 12 designated sectors and develop at least 2,000 start-ups in next five years. 
  • Develop at least 10 lakh sq ft of incubation space within the state over the next five years.
