Scientist S Somnath took charge as the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre succeeding K Sivan.

  • K Sivan was recently appointed as the Chairman of the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization).
  • S Somnath took charge at a function in ISRO headquarter in Bengaluru at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
  • He is currently the Director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre at Valiamala. This is the lead centre responsible for liquid engines and stages for all launch vehicles and satellite programs of ISRO.

About S Somnath

  • He was the Associate Director (Projects) of VSSC and also the Project Director of GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle.
  • S Somnath had joined ISRO in 1985 and was a team leader for Integration of PSLV during its early development phase and during the first flight of PSLV and the successful second flight PSLV-D2.
  • In 1985 he joined ISRO and was a team leader for Integration of PSLV during its early development phase and during the first flight of PSLV and the successful second flight PSLV-D2.
  • Under his leadership as the Project Director, the first experimental flight of LVM3-X/CARE mission was successfully accomplished on 18th December 2014.
  • As a Project Manager, he efficiently handled areas of mechanisms, pyro-technique systems and satellite launch service management.
  • The launches of many commercial mini satellites were successfully conceived and executed by him.
  • He has made significant contributions to the overall architecture and development of PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and GSLV MK III.
