Mary Kom : 1st Indian woman to win CWG gold in Boxing

Mary Kom clinched her maiden Commonwealth Games gold in the CWG 2018 being held in Gold Coast, Australia.

  • She has become the 1st Indian woman to win a gold in the Commonwealth Games in any boxing event.
  • She defeated Kristina O’Hara of Northern Ireland in the finals of the women’s 48 kg boxing finals at the CWG 2018 claiming an unanimous verdict of 5-0.
  • The 35-year-old, five-time world champion and Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom was participating in her maiden Commonwealth Games.

About MC Mary Kom

  • Mary Kom is an Indian Olympic boxer hailing from the Kom tribe in Manipur. 
  • She is a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
  • She is the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics and winning the bronze medal.
  • She was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha by the President of India on 26th April 2016.
  • In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, appointed Mary Kom as national observer for boxing.
  • She has been awarded with Padma Bhushan, Arjuna award, Padma Shri, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award etc. 

CWG 2018

  • The 2018 Commonwealth Games are officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Gold Coast 2018.
  • It is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth that is currently being held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, between 4 and 15 April 2018. 
  • It is the fifth time Australia has hosted the Commonwealth Games.
  • The motto for CWG 2018 is “Share the Dream”.
  • It will witness 275 events in 19 sports with an overall participation from 71 Commonwealth teams.
  • Beach Volleyball, Para Triathlon and Women’s Rugby Sevens have made their Commonwealth Games debuts and for the first time at a Commonwealth Games, an equal number of men’s and women’s medal events were contested.
