Anti-Terrorism Day Observed May 21st

Every year May 21st is observed as Anti-Terrorism Day in India.

Details:

  • The day is observed in the memory of former Indian Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi who passed away on this day.
  • Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated at an election rally near Chennai by a suicide bomber from the LTTE on 21st May 1991.
  • On this day the Government intends to spread awareness among the people about the danger of terrorism and violence and its effect on the people, society and the country as a whole.

Purpose of observing Anti-Terrorism Day:

  • To spread the message of global peace and non-violence.
  • Deter vulnerable youth from following cult practices and being misguided.
  • Commemorate and honor the sacrifices made by thousands of soldiers who battled against terrorism.
  • Pay homage to the victims who lost their lives in terrorist attacks.
  • Device ways and hold awareness programs to protect future generations from radical influence.

Goverment's efforts:

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs requested all Varsities and affiliated colleges to observe the day.
  • The objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is to wean away the people from terrorism and violence.
  • Its motive is to promote unity, peace and harmony across the nation.
  • On this day Anti- terrorism pledge is taken in all government offices, PSU and in other public organisations.
  • Events like debates, discussions, symposiums, seminars lectures will be held in schools, colleges and in universities on dangers of terrorism.
