Current context: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is celebrating its 81st raising day on 27th July 2019.

  • The force was recognised and came into existence as the Crown Representative's Police on 27th July 1939. It became the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) with the enactment of the CRPF Act on 28th December 1949.
  • The force consists of 246 battalions, including six women battalions, 15 Rapid Action Force (anti-riots) battalions, 208 executive battalions and 10 CoBRA (specialised anti-Naxala) battalions.
  • One battalion comprises around 1,000 personnel.
  • The force has five signal battalions, 43 Group Centres, 20 training institutions, one Parliament Duty Group, one Special Duty Group and four composite hospitals of 100 bed and 17 composite hospitals of 50 bed.
  • CRFP is induced with the task to enable the government to maintain rule of law, internal security effectively and public order, to promote social harmony and development, preserve national integrity by upholding the supremacy of the Constitution.
  • The CRPF is the leading force in fighting with the Left-Wing Extremism and insurgency in the Northeast and dealing with the militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
