Current context: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of Colistin in the animal food industry

  • The ban is imposed under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940

  • The Ministry has taken the step to ensure arbitrary use of colistin in the food industry, as growth supplements in poultry, animals, aquafarms to reduce chances of resistance
  • The order issued has directed manufacturers of colistin to affix a label on it reading: Not to be used in food-producing animals, aqua farming, poultry and as animal feed supplements
  • The aim is to cut the use of colistin and limit it to only therapeutic usage
